Where the calories come from

  • The dough is folded with ghee or oil, so roti canai has more fat per gram than rice or thosai.
  • Protein is low: a plain two-piece set gives about 6 g. An egg (roti telur) roughly doubles it.
  • Roti planta is our estimate: a 10–14 g knob of margarine (about 717 kcal per 100 g, USDA) adds 70–100 kcal.

Lighter swaps

  • One piece with dhal instead of two with curry

Around 300–360 kcal instead of 510 kcal or more.

  • Roti telur instead of roti planta

Similar calories but more protein from the egg.

  • Paper thosai instead of roti

About 150 kcal per piece on HPB data.

  • Teh-O kosong instead of teh tarik

Under 10 kcal instead of 120–150 kcal.

Roti canai calories: FAQ

About 250 to 300 kcal for a plain piece. MyFCD lists a 95 g piece at about 300 kcal and HPB lists a 71 g plain prata at 246 kcal.

Is roti prata the same as roti canai?

Yes. Singapore calls it roti prata and Malaysia calls it roti canai; the numbers on this page apply to both.
